I’m reaching out to the neurodivergent community on Medium for assistance researching a news story.

If you often enjoy content from neurodivergent creators on TikTok, I’d like to interview you about your experiences.

Your voice should be heard.

The TikTok logo. A musical-note-like black shape outlined in teal and pink, and the words TikTok, in black ink with the same teal and pink around the o.
The TikTok logo.

Every so often I see something in news publications and social media complaining that TikTok is full of videos by people who identify as neurodivergent or mentally ill, and these videos are full of inaccurate and unvalidated information.

What’s missing from the public discourse is your perspective.

What are you looking for on TikTok? Information? Validation? Other neurodivergent people to talk with? Something else?

How does content from neurodivergent creators on TikTok affect your life? What do you gain from it?

How do you decide what to believe in a TikTok video?

What do you wish people understood about neurodivergent TikTok videos?

(Plus: are there other questions journalists should be asking?).

Here’s a chance to share your experiences with the world.

You’re taking part in an important cultural phenomenon — and you can help the world understand it.

If you’d like to be interviewed, shoot me an email at emilymorson @ gmail.com. The interview can be conducted by email, Zoom, or other format of your choice.

If you know other people who might want to participate, please let them know, and share a link to this post on your favorite social media sites.

Thank you!

Disclaimers

  1. The process of freelance journal has multiple steps. First, one does preliminary research and pitches a proposal for a story to publication editors. If the story is accepted, the journalist completes the research and writes the story. I am at the pitching stage. Thus, it could take a while for this story to appear.
  2. News stories are not always accepted for publication, or it may be necessary to pitch to multiple publications before a story is accepted.
  3. This is my first time interviewing people for a news story.
  4. I do not use TikTok myself, so you may have to explain some basic things. That will also help me explain TikTok videos to people who may be unfamiliar.
